Evan clicked with the Apex Kart Track from the moment he did his track walk. “It’s like Rossi at Mugello,” he said. During practice, Evan smashed his goal of breaking 1 minute and started dipping into the low 58s by race day. He had a rough time during morning practice, crashing during both sessions, but his spirits were high for the races.

Troy (#29) got the hole shot for race 1, but Evan stayed with him. He waited for his opportunity and made a clean pass for the lead. He put his head down, hit his marks and gave it the gas. Little by little he developed a commanding lead and took the checkered flag by a good margin.

Race 2 started out the same way with Troy out front and Evan on his tail. Again, Evan waited for his opportunity and took Troy on the inside after the long front straightaway. Evan put down some more hot laps and took his second win of the day, sweeping the weekend!

This was a tough round for Miles. As much as he tried, he just wasn’t putting down the lap times he wanted to. He was having trouble with the front end jittering while leaned over, which wasn’t giving him a lot of confidence. He rode around it as best he could, but it was always in his mind as he leaned it over.

His first race of the day on Sunday was 650 Twins, which was pretty uneventful. He got a decent start and made a few passes throughout the race, finishing in 11th place. During his next race, Formula 4, he turned his best laps of the day, riding alone most of the race and finishing in 9th. In 650 Production, his final race of the day, Miles got a pretty rough start but crossed the line 3rd after another lonely ride.

Huge thanks to Grandma & Grandpa Alexander for making it out to Redding to cheer Evan on. He has always loved Redding—it’s where he got his first win. This time the course was set up the opposite direction and was very technical with a ton of slow transition corners and chicanes. Evan was practicing hard all day Friday and Saturday trying to get the track down and ended up with heat exhaustion Saturday night from the 100 plus degree weather.

After getting some rest and ingesting some electrolytes, Evan was ready for his races. Evan got a decent start, but Troy (#29) and Errol (#39) got out in front of him, and he was third coming out of turn 1. Errol crashed out with a spectacular highside in turn 2, putting Evan in second place. Troy was on fire and Evan wasn’t able to catch him, so had to settle for second place.

Race 2 started out just like race 1, but this time Errol was hot on Troy’s heels for most of the race with Evan trailing behind the pair. On the second to last lap, Errol crashed out going into the chicane after the back straight. That put Evan into second place and on the podium for both races. Even though he didn’t win, Evan was happy for his best buddy Troy and his success over the weekend.

Evan had fond memories of Grange and was really looking forward to going back. They were running it the opposite direction from the previous year, so Evan was concentrating on getting his lines down during practice. He was having a little trouble with the short-track bypass and ran off twice there during the first day, but had it down by the end of the day Saturday.

In his first race, Evan had a great start and got out ahead of the pack. Errol (#39) was all over Evan’s back tire and they began to break away from the rest of the field. Errol would show Evan a wheel in almost every other corner, but Evan kept his lines tight and didn’t let Errol through. After fighting Errol off for the entire race, Evan crossed the finish line barely a bike length in front of Errol for the win.

Evan’s start in race 2 wasn’t quite as good as his first. This time Errol and Emi (#16) got out in front of him early on. Evan’s gearing was a little low, which had worked out great for him in the first race, but was now a liability because Errol and Emi were pulling away in the faster parts of the track. Evan held his position and picked up a third place in race 2. All in all, a successful weekend!

This was the first (of many!) Thunderhill rounds for 2014. Miles was excited to get back to the track he knows best, especially after having a few rough rounds at the beginning of the season. Miles was able to concentrate on his riding a little more since he knew the track well, which helped out during practice. He was starting to regain his confidence and was excited for race day!

In his first race, 650 Twins, Miles had a lonely ride, passing the checkered flag in 11th. In his second race, Formula 4, Miles had a great time duking it out with Leon Hill (#367), just edging him out for another 11th place. Leon was ready for a rematch in 650 Production, and he and Miles had a great race. After multiple back and forth passes, it all came down to the last turn. Miles got a good drive coming down the back straightaway and was able to get a wheel in front of Leon, and they played chicken on the brakes, both waiting until the last moment. Miles ran wide and Leon cut underneath him, but Miles still had a chance until he missed a shift, giving Leon the chance to get away. Miles was disappointed to be just off the podium in 4th, but had a great time during the race.
