It was another beautiful weekend at Thunderhill. Miles struggled a little bit in practice with tires that were in pretty bad shape—had to save the good rubber for the races, though! Formula IV was the first race for Miles on Sunday. He got balked on the start when two riders bumped in front of him (luckily, they both stayed up), but caught up to the middle pack, and was able to make a few passes to finish in 10th. As Miles came into the pits he noticed his bike was getting pretty hot and started to boil over, but he was able to manage it the rest of the day by keeping his speed up in the pits. After a few mediocre starts, Miles placed 9th in an uneventful 450 Superbike race and then took 7th in his last race of the day, 450 Production.

It was another Father’s Day at the track, but is there anything Miles would rather be doing than watching Evan race? Probably not! It was a beautiful day at Sonoma with Supermoto USA. It was also a quick day. Since this was also an AMA event, Evan’s youth race was an exhibition race, so he got two practice sessions in the morning and then it was on to his main event right before lunch. Evan got a decent launch from the back row and made his way through the field to get 1st place in the Youth 65/125 class! He said he wanted to get Miles a win for Father’s Day and he did just that!

It was the first night race of the season, which is always interesting for the kids since the first heat didn’t even start until 1 hour after bedtime! Something about sitting atop a 2-wheeled vehicle hurtling through the night kept Evan awake, though (Sydney, not so much). After 2 heats, Evan was gridded 5th with some great competition in the 65GP class. The racing was tight, and Evan fought his way into 4th place and was planning a move for the last podium position on the final lap. Unfortunately, things didn’t go his way when the race was accidentally stopped one lap early, robbing Evan of his chance to make a move. It was still a great, close race and Evan had a blast!

Miles was excited to be at Thunderhill for the first time on his new bike. He knows Thunderhill pretty well and was excited to let the 450 stretch its legs down the long straights. Saturday practice went well and it gave Miles a chance to get the bike dialed in (with the help of Catalyst Reaction and Dunlop, of course!) The track was a little slow this weekend, so it was going to be a challenge for Miles to get a new PR, but he was generally happy with his lap times and ready to race!

It was a pretty warm weekend, so it was nice to have his races early in the day. First up was 450 Production. Miles felt like he was riding well, but could tell there was some room for improvement. He got a decent start, but lost a few places over the first few laps before the race was stopped with a red flag. The restarted 4-lap race yielded a similar result with Miles ultimately finishing in 8th. Miles ended the day with a 10th in 450 Superbike and a 15th in Formula IV. He was liking the 450 bike, but it was definitely taking some getting used to.

It was Evan’s first Supermoto USA event, and he was excited, but also a little tentative of the unknown. He had a really good time in practice, but it was over before he knew it—Supermoto USA moves really fast!. It was time for his heat, and Evan was a little worried about his start. He was struggling with the clutch and his race starts, and sure enough, he stalled on the start in his first heat. Miles got him started back up and he was able to make up a few places, finishing the heat in 8th.

Unfortunately, his start in the main wasn’t any better, but Miles got him up and running with a push start a little quicker this time. Evan made his way through the field finishing mid-pack in 7th place. He came off track disappointed, but determined to get better at his starts.
